I was waiting to see if someone asked a question like this because of the trees. I can always count on you Kat

When we were driving along this area I said to my wife "A shot of this might actually interest the Canadians because when they need water they just go and plug into the nearest lake ... and there's always a 'nearest lake' in Canada. But over here there isn't. So we make them.
Lake Somerset is a dam so those trees are flooded. Under there somewhere are peoples homes from many years ago also.
In Aussie, on similar dams/ lakes, the areas where there is a lot of trees sticking out of the water, we call 'The Timbers' or 'The Sticks'. Good finishing in and around the 'Timbers'

So then I assume man made?

Yes ... man made. A proper concrete dam with slipways etc is at the end of the valley holding all the water in. The river is flooded and the lake is born. Brisbane has water. My Stanley River Rflections shot was taken a few k's down stream from the slipway/dam .... where it runs into Lake Wivenhoe ... another lake with a full dam wall which supplies Brisbane.
When you get years without decent rain ... you need to store a lot of water somehow.

Actually we have a few dams here as well complete with towns under them.

and my understanding is that there's an entire fort under the Lahave River down towards the sea.

But definitely in Nova Scotia you are only a short drive away from a lake no matter where you are.

I'm surprized you have to make lakes for water resources over there but there you go
