Photographers don’t give your rights away — Photography podcast #42

Photography podcast #42 is based on a post by our photography forum member tegan, called Photo Contests: Photographers LOSE. This short podcast expands on that post and discusses how photographers need to be aware of the rights that they are giving away by joining photo contests, forums, social networking sites like Facebook etc.

Photography links mentioned in this podcast:
Million places on Earth — terms and conditions
Facebook — terms of service

Thanks as always to photodog, debbie T and sorena for recent comments and suggestions. We LOVE comments and suggestions so please send more.

Really useful. Was thinking about this these days. The only place where I really post images is deviantart.

Did the licese seem to you fishy in any way?

Thanks for another informative show. I have never really been a contest contributer, but this show serves as an important reminder to be aware of everything you do — especially with your photos.

Great podcast, I just recently came across it browsing the podcast directory in iTunes. I am glad you talked about this issue. I believe this is one of the biggest problems in world of photography. There are many people with point & shoots, entry level DSLR’s or even the pro Nikon D3 type cameras that just want to see their photographs published, featured in an article, or whatever. But what they don’t realize is that, they are hurting the industry. Make these magazines and publication houses pay for your work, they make money on advertising (using your photo), they make money on sales and you as a photographer should be making money for your work and your photos; even if you’re using point & shoot. But the problem is, why they would pay landscape/cityscape photographer to take pictures of Boston for example, when they can run a contest or “see your photo published” and receive images for free.

No wonder, photography is an average of $25k a year job; I was making almost that working as a gas station clerk in my high school/college days. I believe, it should be our duty and responsibility to get the word out there and stop people for contributing to such contests, and communities like facebook, myspace, etc.

It’s just amazing how people think that winning a contest or getting a photo published will make them popular. Do some research on this topic, and see how many people actually succeeded. Not many, and then do some research on income/ expenses on some of these companies taking your photos. You will see income grow, and expense on photography decline. Research, how many photographers they have let go, or contracted over the last year compared to the previous years.

    Rant Off…

I was all over the place in this one. Anyways, great site, podcasts and forum. I am looking forward to contribute to your expanding forum.
