I think I can answer this correctly. One reason is as Marko mentioned, that if an image is bound for say a large print, it may need more sharpening upon output. So some digital photographers probably only sharpen upon exit, so to speak. Another thing that I hear very often is in discussions of workflow which often suggest sharpening later, especially after noise reduction, so that you are not sharpening noise artifacts etc.

Default A lesson in sharpness request

MA, I'm always impressed with the sharpness and clarity of your shots, especially the recent Pelican photo. It seems to shine it's so clear and crisp. Mine are always dull and soft in comparison. Would you be so kind as to walk us through your work flow with some screen captures of how you do it? Could you also tell us what equipment you used for the shots, camera, lens filter, tripod, etc.

    Thanks
    EJC

Well firstly ... thanks for that comment EJC.
My sharpening process is probably one of my biggest 'secrets' really but I'm happy to share for those who might find it beneficial. It's not that difficult.

This will take some time to prepare though as I'm busy doing a complete re-sort/cull of every photo we have here. Been at it for days already and expect another couple perhaps. But when I'm ready I'll put up a thread on how I do this complete with screenshots etc as you ask
